Recently the Kennedy Center has completed new performance halls and surrounding outdoor space. This new addition is called The REACH and is a place where visitors, audiences, and artists can come together for collaboration, experimentation, and exploration in the spirit of President Kennedy’s vision for a new frontier for the arts
For a couple of weeks in January, the outdoor space was filled with approximately 100 stunning Winter Lanterns crafted by Chinese artisans illuminated by about 10,000 colored LED lights, The shades are crafted from delicate paper or silk.
Since the photos were taken at night it is difficult to determine the size of the various lanterns. The first photo does include some people that can give some sense of the size. The bear at the top of the page was about 5 ft. tall. The tall mushroom was probably 9-10 ft. tall as was the lantern in the last slide.
