As you may have discerned from previous posts (Niki de Saint Phalle and Sculpture, Music, Lightshow) we enjoy viewing outdoor sculptures and were delighted upon hearing of the installations of sculptures by Hung Yi in DC.
‘Six sculptures, Fancy Animal Carnival, by the Taiwanese artist Hung Yi are on display in Washington DC. They are large, brightly colored sculptures. The painted patterns reflect folk culture and religion, as well as the artist’s personal experiences and observations of people’s everyday lives. Hung Yi individually forges steel plates and adds to their surface a rich palette of painted symbols and forms from Taiwanese folk art and daily life.’
From the artist – ‘Finding the art that works for you, that is resonant, that strikes a responsive chord in the hearts of your viewers, is important. Making art from animals works for me, and I’ve been devoted to it’.
Each of the sculptures has a plaque giving a brief explanation of the sculpture. The sculptures are both serious and whimsical.
Fun with the sculptures
